Wednesday, December 16, 2009

Every week this month, we're giving away a Blue Collar Dog Treat Gift. To enter, simply answer the Canine Question of the Week. Enter your answer by midnight PST Sunday, Dec 20th. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing from all correct answers and announced on MONDAY DEC 21st so we can get the prize shipped to arrive before Christmas. Winner will be posted here and on Facebook and must contact me at bluecollardogtreats@comcast.net with mailing info before Tuesday noon, or another name will be drawn.

When you have the answer, enter it in a comment at the end of this post and that's it- you're in. Want extra chances to win? Being a blog follower gives you a second entry and being a Facebook fan gives you a third entry. You only need to enter one comment. If you've joined as a Follower and/or Facebook Fan we'll do the math to make sure you get your additional entries. Sorry, I can only ship to US addresses right now.

I digress...

I think I've proven my point. Lots of GREAT Dogs in the 1950s.

The CANINE QUESTION OF THE WEEK is...
WHO WAS YOUR TOP DOG WHEN YOU WERE A KID?

There's no right or wrong answer for this question and if your "top dog" happens to be of the bovine, lupine, piscine, vulpine, porcine, equine, cavine, terrapine or yes, even the feline persuasion, that's fine too.
Just share a sweet memory of a pet or favorite animal from your childhood and you're in the drawing for this week's prize.

The prize this week is
a BLUE COLLAR DOG TREAT STOCKING
................
................filled with Blue Collar Dog Treats!

If you're not the lucky winner for this week, you can still put these gifts under your favorite furry friend's tree. Just head over to my Etsy shop and place an order using PayPal.
Remember I ship USPS flat rate 3 day delivery- it's the cheapest & fastest way to get it there.

Are you local or coming home to the Skagit Valley for the Holidays?
No need to order through Etsy. Just give me a call at 360-293-3556 and we'll arrange for a pick up.

I'm ineligible, of course, but in 1952 my top dog was Duchess, a silky, black cocker spaniel. I was six and we lived in DC. Dad was USAF and we got transferred to Guam. No dogs were allowed to go so we had to give my beautiful Duchess away.

Broken hearted, I climbed into the wringer-washing machine packing crate, cried myself to sleep & stayed there all day while my frantic parents had the Andrews AFB APs out looking for me.

I don't remember getting a spanking but knowing my dad, Sgt. Rush, I probably got a good thwack on the butt and a lecture about being a good little AF dependant.
Might have been the 1st time I heard the phrase "permanent record."

Well, aside from our beagle Poppy, I LOVED Benji. Loved his movies and everything about him.
Not the kind of dog I'd get now, but back then he was my fave!

Well, after reading your own recollection, I hope you won't think I'm making mine up, but...
The BEST dog in the world was MY black cocker spaniel, named Buddy Boy. He was an English Cocker and a show dog. He was only a few points away from becoming a champion (his "real" name was Black Prince something-or-other, something-or-other, etc), but he developed the shakes. They called it St. Vitus Dance, and because of the shakes he could no longer be shown.
We got him for free, without his papers, with the stipulation that we would let him become just a family dog and never show him.
No problem! What's more, one week with our family and on a steady diel of Kennel-Ration (rather than the complicated cooked up recipe my Mother was given), his shakes were gone. neener, neener, neener.
The kindest, gentlest, sweetest dog ever. I still have a framed photo of him in my Living Room, some 50+ years later.
sniff. I miss my Buddy Boy.

The dog I loved as a kid was Lassie. I also liked the cartoon Scooby Doo.

My dog, Meshindi, was a great dog. He was a certified therapy dog when he was alive. He brought love and laughter to so many kids at the our local children's home.

Kouga our new dog will hopefully pass his test this spring and follow in Meshindi's footsteps ( I mean pawprints).

Growing up in a typical 50's neighbourhood, it seemed all my friends had pets, but we didn't. I begged and pleaded, but to no avail. One very cold and snowy evening, Daddy, in full dress uniform, walked in with the tattiest looking bundle of fur you had ever seen. Mom was horrified, but Judy and I were thrilled to death. Dad had been to the Officer's Mess, and had seen this little pup huddled in a corner, trying to get warm. After enquiring from everyone there about the dog, he couldn't find anyone who knew her. Softhearted, he brought her home, and she was our Trixie for the next 8 years. Washed and groomed, warm and fed, she was a gracious little lady, letting us pet and love her up. She never had a cranky moment, and was our first pet. I still think of her very fondly, 50 odd years later.
